Introduction:
Respiratory rhythms are involuntary in action. The rhythms make sure the continuous exchange of gases in the body alongside the oxidation of glucose or food. Autonomous refers to the processes which occur on their own and are not consciously controlled.

Neural output from the brain stem regulated breathing including respiratory rate and depth. In a patient with damage to the medulla oblongata and subsequently to the phrenic nerve, which of the following would be true?
a. the diaphragm may not be able to contract, resulting in respiratory arrest
b. the respiratory rate and depth would increase as signals from the pons would increase
c. the diaphragm will begin to contract on its own via autorhythmic cells
Some competitive
swimmers hyperventilate
before a race, thinking they
can "load up on extra
oxygen" and hold their
breaths longer underwater.
While they can indeed hold
their breaths longer, it is not
for the reason they think.
Furthermore, some have
lost consciousness and
drowned because of this
practice. What is wrong
with this thinking, and what
accounts for the loss of
consciousness?
Callisto has managed to escape Xena, and therefore Xena decides to rest for the night in a small but deep cave at a high altitude in the mountains. Describe the changes in Xena’s intrathoracic and intrapleural volume and pressure during quiet inspiration. Explain how these changes occur and describe their effect upon airflow.
Explain how the rate of gas exchange between Xena’s alveolar air and blood changes when she moves to high altitude and describe one possible compensatory change that occurs in her body as the consequence.
