Chapter 23, Problem 8MTF
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Fasciola hepatica is one of the two species of liver fluke. Human hosts can acquire this parasite by unknowingly ingesting cysts present on water based vegetation like watercress. After ingestion, they reach the bile ducts for maturation by piercing through the walls of intestine and liver. The infection caused is symptomatic of fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. In extreme cases, it can also cause failure of the liver.
