Interpretation:
The number of ATP produced by the complete oxidation of pyruvate has to be calculated.
Concept Introduction:
Pyruvate is formed by glucose in glycolysis. Pyruvate oxidation is the next step after glycolysis in the formation of energy, ATP. It occurs in the mitochondrial matrix. Pyruvate oxidation converts pyruvate to acetyl CoA that produces NADH and releases carbon dioxide. The acetyl CoA produced then enters the citric cycle to catalyze the synthesis of ATP.
