The three important factors that stimulate the central and peripheral chemoreceptors and its influences on breathing.
Introduction:
Breathing is also known as respiration is a process of exchange of gases such as transporting oxygen (O2) from the lungs to the target tissues and removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from tissues to the lungs. The rate and depth of breathing are altered by the brain stem. The brain stem has respiratory centers that receive input from central and peripheral chemoreceptors that monitor the composition of the blood and the CSF (cerebrospinal fluid). The central chemoreceptor is found in the medulla oblongata that detects 75% of the change due to pH shifts. Peripheral chemoreceptors such as aortic and carotid bodies are found in the blood vessels that detect any chemical alterations such as CO2 concentration and pH in the blood.
