Chapter 22, Problem 3WIO
Summary Introduction

To describe:

The male and female gametophyte of flowering plants:

Introduction:

The life cycle of angiosperm plant undergoes alternation of generations with multicellular diploid and haploid stages. The sporophyte is the diploid generation which produces spores by meiosis. Each spore divides mitotically to produce a multicellular haploid gametophyte, which undergoes mitosis to generate haploid gametes-egg cells or sperm cells. These gametes fuse at the event of fertilization.

Describe the male and female gametophytes of flowering plants.
What are the female gametophytes of flowering plants, and where are they formed?
The three illustrations represent the three types of relationships between the haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte generations found among plants. Identify the types of plants and the characteristics that belong with each of the three types of relationships. Bryophyte Ferns Seed plants ferns and horsetails mosses, liverworts, and other bryophytes Ginko biloba, spruce trees, and other gymnosperms The gametophyte requires nourishment from the sporophyte in order to survive. The sporophyte and gametophyte generations grow independently and produce differently shaped plants. The sporophyte cannot survive without nourishment from the gametophyte. Answer Bank Incorrect
