Concept introduction:

Treating benzene with concentrated sulfuric acid yields benzenesulfonic acid, whereby a sulfo group, SO3H, has been incorporated onto the ring. This kind of substitution reaction is called sulfonation. SO3H+ is believed to be the electrophile involved in the electrophilic addition step of electrophilic aromatic substitution. The reverse of sulfonation reaction is called desulfonation.
