Concept explainers
The process of monitoring the internal conditions maintained by an organism is referred to as homeostasis. This state of equilibrium is the condition of optimum functioning of the living organisms and that includes fluid balance and body temperature. Even though large variations happen in the outside environment, homeostasis maintains the suitable internal conditions for life processes.
If any departure occurs in the set point, homeostasis occurs through homeostatic pathways (a sequence of steps that restore homeostasis). This pathway continually facilitates an organism to sense an alteration in its internal environment, such as physical and chemical characteristics, and adjust the changes rapidly.
