To review:
The structural features of lymphatic capillaries and their comparison with blood capillaries.
Introduction:
The circulatory system is associated with the transportation of blood and various dissolved essential materials to different parts of the body. There are various structures that are associated with the circulatory system, in order to complete its tasks. Several structures perform the same function at different levels of the body but are structurally different.
Explanation of Solution
Lymphatic capillaries are thin-walled permeable vessels connected to the areolar connective tissue of the blood capillaries. They carry the lymphatic fluid returning after the blood circulation from different parts of the body. Blood capillaries are the thinnest components of arteries and veins which are in direct contact with the tissues that exchange gases and other materials for respiration. The differences between the lymphatic capillaries and the blood capillaries are summarized below:

- What cells does lymph fluid contain?arrow_forward(a) The lymphatic system is a part of the circulatory system and a vital part of the immune system. It is a network of tubes throughout the body that drains fluid (called lymph) from tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream. (i) Give a brief explanation why the lymphatic system is a one-way system, whereas the blood vascular system is a two-way system. (ii) Point out TWO (2) type of infections that may cause the lymph nodes to swell.arrow_forwardWhat is lymph and where does it come from?arrow_forward
- Compared to veins, are there more or fewer anastomoses between lymphatic collecting vessels?arrow_forwardWhat is the mechanism for lymphocyte maturation so that lymphocytes will respond to non-self cells and not respond to self cells? What happens to the lymphocytes that do respond to self cells?arrow_forwardWhat is lymph node?arrow_forward
- What are the anatomic characteristics of each type of leukocyte? How can you tell these leukocytes apart when you view a blood smear under the microscope?arrow_forwardLymphatic System Where is the excessive fluid which leaks during diffusion collected?arrow_forwardEven though the lymphatic system is a component of the circulatory system, why is the term circulation not the most appropriate term to describe the flow of lymph? How would you describe the flow? Explain how lymph is formed. What would be the impact on lymph formation if the osmotic force at the venous end of the capillary was more successful at recovering fluid lost at the arterial end?arrow_forward
