To write:
About the importance of the layer of lichen where photosynthesis takes place.
Introduction:
Explanation of Solution
Lichen is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae or a photosynthetic partner is called lichen. The fungus usually is ascomycetes, but lichens also may contain basidiomycetes. The photosynthetic partner is either green algae or cyanobacteria which provides food for both organisms. The layer of the lichen where photosynthesis takes place is represented by layer 2. The fungus provides a dense web of hyphae in which the algae or cyanobacterium can grow. Lichens are found in some of the harshest environment because they need light, air, and minerals to grow. These fungi get benefit from the carbohydrates produced by the cyanobacteria or algae via photosynthesis.
Therefore, it can be concluded that in lichen, photosynthesis takes place in cyanobacteria or algae that grow in between the layers of hyphae.
