Chapter 20, Problem 20.71P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The pH value of 3.00M acetic acid solution and the pH value on further dilution of the acid have to be calculated.

Concept introduction:

pH: The concentration of hydrogen ion is measured using pH scale. The pH of a solution is a figure that expresses the acidity or the alkalinity of a given solution.

It is defined as the negative base-10 logarithm of the hydrogen or hydronium ion concentration.

  pH=-log[H3O+]

Answer to Problem 20.71P

The pH value of 3.00M acetic acid is 4.7.

The pH value of diluted solution of 3.00M acetic acid is 3.2.

Explanation of Solution

Given: 3.00M CH3COOH(aq) solution in which 2.00 mL is diluted to make solution of 250.0mL. Ka value of acetic acid is 1.8×10-5 M.

First, the pKa value is calculated using given Ka value.

    pKa= -log [Ka]= -log [1.8×10-5]= 4.7

The ICE table for reaction of CH3COOH(aq) with water is used to determine the [H3O+] concentration.

     CH3COOH(aq)+ H2O(l) CH3COO(aq) + H3O+(aq)Initial       3                                      0                   0Change                 -x                                                    +x                +xEquilibrium         3-x                                                     x                   xKa = [CH3COO][H3O+][CH3COOH]

    Ka = [CH3COO][H3O+][CH3COOH]1.8×105 M= x23-xx=7.35×103M[H3O+] = 7.35×103M

    pH = -log [H3O+]= -log [7.35×103]= 2.1

Next, the concentration for the diluted solution is determined by using N1V1 = N2V2.

    N1V1 = N2V2 3.00M×2.00mL= N2×250mLN23.00×2.00mL250mL= 0.024M

The ICE table for reaction of diluted CH3COOH(aq) with water is used to determine the [H3O+] concentration.

     CH3COOH(aq)+ H2O(l) CH3COO(aq) + H3O+(aq)Initial       0.024                                      0                   0Change                     -x                                                           +x                +xEquilibrium           0.024-x                                                       x                  xKa = [CH3COO][H3O+][CH3COOH]

    Ka = [CH3COO][H3O+][CH3COOH]1.8×105 M= x20.024-xx=6.57×104M[H3O+] = 6.57×104M

    pH = -log [H3O+]= -log [6.57×104]= 3.2
