Question
Chapter 20, Problem 20.54P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: The mechanism for the given reaction has to be proposed:
Concept Introduction:
Pericyclic reaction:
The pericyclic reaction involves the redistribution of six electrons through the formation of a cyclic transition state from which a diene compound gets converted into its isomeric form.
Example with mechanism of a pericyclic reaction:
In this mechanism, two pi-bonds and one sigma bond of the reactant molecule has been broken and formed two new pi-bonds through a cyclic transition state.

b) The Wolf-Kishner reduction is a reaction used in Organic Chemistry to convert
carbonyl functionalities into methylene group. The reaction was used to convert
an aldehyde or ketone to an alkane using hydrazine, base and thermal conditions.
The mechanism begins with the attack of hydrazine of the aldehyde or ketone.
Stage 1: The reaction of aldehyde/ketone with hydrazine to produce hydrazine
Stage 2: Reaction with the base and heat to convert hydrozone to alkane
Write the mechanism of the reaction.
Acetic acid has been mixed with isoamyl alcohol to produce isoamyl acetate giving off a banana smell. Propose a reaction mechanism for this reaction.
As we will learn in Chapter 9, an epoxide is an ether with an oxygen atom in a three-membered ring. Epoxides can be made by intramolecular SN2 reactions of intermediates that contain a nucleophile and a leaving group on adjacent carbons, as shown.Assume that each of the following starting materials can be converted to an epoxide by this reaction. Draw the product formed (including stereochemistry) from each starting material. Why might some of these reactions be more difficult than others in yielding nucleophilic substitution products?
