Chapter 20, Problem 18BS
Summary Introduction
To explain:
The local government or school to hold a bioblitz in a community.
Introduction:
Bioblitz is the acute period of biological surveying in which all the living species that are present within a particular area are recorded. This intensive area study is performed by many scientists, naturalists, and volunteers over a continuous period of time generally

The biodiversity of the planet is rapidly being depleted. Scientists' efforts to monitor and protect
biodiversity are being aided by a slew of new technologies and the volunteer work of ordinary
citizens.
To help scientists in their conservation work, new technologies have been developed. For example,
Footprint identification technique (FIT) uses photo digitization to identify the footprints of large
cats and other mammals, which will allow collection of data about these animals in a noninvasive
manner. Other noninvasive data collection techniques include vocalization identification, drones,
DNA analysis, and camera-trapping. Apps such as eBird and iNaturalist allow amateurs to record
their observations in open-access online databases for further analysis.
Smartphones and drones could be useful in collecting data to prevent poaching, although such
technologies are in their infancy and still not widely available in developing countries. Remote
sensing could be used to monitor changes in…
Quadrat sampling is a method by which organisms in a certain
proportion (sample) of the habitat are counted directly. As with all
sampling methods, it is used to estimate population parameters
when the organisms present are too numerous to count in total.
It can be used to estimate population abundance (number),
density, frequency of occurrence, and distribution. Quadrats
may be used without a transect when studying a relatively uniform
habitat. In this case, the quadrat positions are chosen randomly
using a random number table.
The general procedure is to count all the individuals (or estimate
their percentage cover) in a number of quadrats of known size and
to use this information to work out the abundance or percentage
cover value for the whole area. The number of quadrats used and
their size should be appropriate to the type of organism involved
(e.g. grass vs tree).

The paper mill worked with a group of environmental scientists to develop new, sustainable waste management protocols in order to minimize the amount of harmful chemicals being released into the river ecosystem. Which of the following is a likely effect of the paper mill's sustainable waste management protocols? Choose 1 answer: The chemical waste will have to be dumped in a different river, likely affecting fish and invertebrate populations in that ecosystem. The river will be more hospitable to fish, helping increase biodiversity within the river's fish populations. The paper mill will go out of business due to the extra costs of waste management.
