Concept explainers
A space probe may be carried by a rocket into outer space. Your friend asks what kind of force keeps the probe moving after the rocket no longer pushes it. What is your answer?
Answer to Problem 7TE
Due to inertia, the probe is moving after the rocket no longer pushes it.
Explanation of Solution
Inertia states that the moving body doesn't change its state of motion until an external agent acts on it. Also, if a body is in rest, it remains in the same stationary state until some force acts over it.
In case of a space probe, the force is required only to start the motion of the probe, but after moving, no force is required to keep it moving except for the force needed to overcome friction. Thus, the probe moving after the rocket no longer pushes it due to inertia.
Conclusion:
Therefore, due to inertia, the probe is moving after the rocket no longer pushes it.
