GO A red train traveling at 72 km/h and a green train traveling at 144 km/h are headed toward each other along a straight, level track. When they are 950 m apart, each engineer sees the other’s train and applies the brakes. The brakes slow each train at the rate of 1.0 m/s2. Is there a collision? If so, answer yes and give the speed of the red train and the speed of the green train at impact, respectively. If not, answer no and give the separation between the trains when they stop.

Give the given and solution:arrow_forwardAn initially motionless test car is accelerated uniformly to 135 km/hr in 8.08 seconds before striking a simulated deer. The car is in contact with the faux fawn for seconds, after which the car is measured to be traveling at 87.5 km/hr. What is the magnitude of the average acceleration of the car during the collision?arrow_forward
- I was standing on the side of a 10-m foot bridge, holding a ball while watching a car approaching the bridge at uniform speed. When the car was 15 meters away from where I was standing, the ball that I was holding slipped in my hand and the car arrived at the bridge when the ball hit the ground. What was the speed of the train? ( Assume that the final velocity of the ball is NOT zero)arrow_forwardYou're an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, examining a subway accident in which a train going at 90 km/hkm/h collided with a slower train traveling in the same direction at 24 km/hkm/h . Your job is to determine the relative speed of the collision, to help establish new crash standards. The faster train's "black box" shows that it began negatively accelerating at 2.1 m/s2m/s2 when it was 52 mm from the slower train, while the slower train continued at constant speed. What do you report ?arrow_forwardYou can perform a popular trick by dropping any peso bill (Ex. 500 peso bill )lengthwise through the thumb and forefinger of a classmate. Tell your classmate to grab the peso bill as fast as possible and he/she can keep the money if he/she catches it. The length of the peso bill is 15.7 cm and the average human reaction time is about 0.20 s. Will your classmate catch the bill and keep the money?arrow_forward
- Suppose a car manufacturer tested its cars for front-end collisions by hauling them up on a crane and dropping them from a certain height. What height corresponds to a collision at 55 km/hkm/h ? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. What height corresponds to a collision at 110 km/hkm/h ? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.arrow_forwardA car is crashed into a tree at the speed of 144 km/h. It took the car 4 seconds to stop. Assume that the car withstood the collision without substantial damage, and the driver received no more than superficial bruises to the surface of her body. (a) Draw a diagram that represent the collision and label all vector quantities. Make sure you pick axes and indicate directionality with signs and unit vectors. (b) Assuming that the acceleration was uniform during the collision, calculate the acceleration and indicate its direction on your diagram. (c) If (at best) a person can withstand 9g acceleration (9 × 9.8m/s ^2 = 88.2 m/s^2 ) only for a few seconds, is the driver of the car survived the crash?arrow_forwardA passenger train driver traveling at 25.0 m/s sees a trolley commuting 5 people is being pushed at a constant 15.0 m/s along the same track and moving in the same direction as the passenger train 200 m away from him. The train driver then applies the brake causing the train to slow down at a rate of 0.100 m/s². If the trolley continues to move forward and the trolley driver plus the passengers immediately react and jump off the trolley as the passenger trains give the signal, will an observer nearby witness a train-trolley collision? Hint: Compute for the time that the train will be able to catch up with the trolley. (Apply quadratic equation)arrow_forward
- Two trains A and B of length 400 m each are moving on two parallel tracks with a uniform speed of 72 Km/h in the same direction, with A ahead of B. The driver of B decides to overtake A and accelerates by 1 m/s. If after 50 s, the guard of B just brushes past the driver of A, what is the original distance between them? 1250 m 150 m 50 m 125 marrow_forwardYou step onto a hot beach with your bare feet. A nerve impulse, generated in your foot, travels through your nervous system at an average speed of 139m/s. How much time does it take for the impulse, which travels at a distance of 1.81m, to reach your brain?arrow_forwardYou are investigating an accident that occurred early on a foggy morning in Oxfordshire. A 2015 Prius Hatchback traveling due north collided in a highway intersection with a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder that was traveling due east. After the collision, the wreckage of the two vehicles was locked together and skidded across the level ground until it struck a tree. You measure that the tree is 11 m from the point of impact. The line from the point of impact to the tree is in a direction 39° north of east. From experience, you estimate that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the ground and the wreckage is 0.45. Shortly before the collision, a police officer with a laser speed gun measured the speed of the Prius to be 80 km/h and, according to a witness, the Prius driver made no attempt to slow down. Four people with a total mass of 230 kg were in the Nissan. The only person in the Prius was the 80 kg driver. The Nissan with its passengers had a mass of 2362 kg, and the Prius with its…arrow_forward
