Chapter 2, Problem 46P
Heartland Airways operates commuter flights in three Midwestern states. Due to a political convention held in Topeka, the airline added several extra flights during a two-week period. Additional cabin crews were hired on a temporary basis. However, rather than hiring additional flight attendants, the airline used its current attendants on overtime. Monica Gaines worked the following schedule on August 10. All of Gaines’s flights on that day were extra flights that the airline would not normally fly.
Gaines earns $12 per hour and is paid time and a half when working overtime.
Required:
- 1. Compute the direct cost of compensating Gaines for her services on the flight from Topeka to Kansas City.
- 2. Compute the cost of Gaines’s services that is an indirect cost.
- 3. How should the cost computed in requirement (2) be treated for cost accounting purposes?
- 4. Gaines ended her workday on August 10 in Kansas City. However, her next scheduled flight departed Topeka at 11:00 a.m. on August 11. This required Gaines to “dead-head” back to Topeka on an early-morning flight. This means she traveled from Kansas City to Topeka as a passenger, rather than as a working flight attendant. Since the morning flight from Kansas City to Topeka was full, Gaines displaced a paying customer. The revenue lost by the airline was $82. What type of cost is the $82? To what flight, if any, is it chargeable? Why?

MidCoast Airlines provides charter airplane services. In October, when the company is operating at 60% of its capacity, it receives a
bid from the local college. The college is organizing a trip for a student group. The college budgeted only $64,000 for round-trip
airfare. MidCoast Airlines normally charges between $84,000 and $94,000 for such service. MidCoast determines its total cost for the
round-trip flight to Washington to be $82,400, which consists of the following.
Variable cost
Fixed cost
Total cost
$ 45,400

$ 82,400
Although the manager at MidCoast supports the college's educational efforts, she is struggling to justify accepting only $64,000.
(a) What is the contribution margin from accepting the offer?
(b) Should the airline accept the $64,000 offer from the college?

Mary Tan is the controller for Duck Associates, a property management company in Portland, Oregon. Each year, Tan and payroll clerk Toby Stock meet with the external auditors about payroll accounting. This year, the auditors suggest that Tan consider outsourcing Duck Associates’s payroll accounting to a company specializing in payroll processing services. This would allow Tan and her staff to focus on their primary responsibility: accounting for the properties under management. At present, payroll requires 1.5 employee positions—payroll clerk Toby Stock and a bookkeeper who spends half her time entering payroll data in the system. Tan considers this suggestion, and she lists the following items relating to outsourcing payroll accounting:
The current payroll software that was purchased for $4,000 three years ago would not be needed if payroll processing were outsourced.
Duck Associates’s bookkeeper would spend half her time preparing the weekly payroll input form that is given to the…

The organization’s head office and payroll department are in Mississauga, Ontario. The current Ontario payroll is $4,750,000.00. After reviewing the numbers, Howard demanded that his controller go back and “work the numbers” again. Howard insisted that if he didn’t see a better operating income number the next time around he would be forced to look for a new controller. Garden Scapes Manufacturing classifies all costs directly related to the manufacturing of its product as product costs. These costs are inventoried and later expensed as costs of goods sold when the product is sold. It recently signed a new contract with the union that calls for time-and-a-half for all work over 40 hours a week and double-time for Saturday and Sunday. Also, a bonus of 1% of the employees earnings for the year is to be paid to the employees at the end of the fiscal year. The controller, the plant manager, and the sales manager disagree as to how the overtime pay and the bonus should be allocated. An examination of the first months payroll under the new union contract provisions shows the following: Analysis of the supporting payroll documents revealed the following: a. More production was scheduled each day than could be handled in a regular workday, resulting in the need for overtime. b. The Saturday and Sunday hours resulted from rush orders with special contract arrangements with the customers. The controller believes that the overtime premiums and the bonus should be charged to factory overhead and spread over all production of the accounting period, regardless of when the jobs were completed. The plant manager favors charging the overtime premiums directly to the jobs worked on during overtime hours and the bonus to administrative expense. The sales manager states that the overtime premiums and bonus are not factory costs chargeable to regular production but are costs created from administrative policies and, therefore, should be charged only to administrative expense. Required: 1. Evaluate each positionthe controllers, the plant managers, and the sales managers. If you disagree with all of the positions taken, present your view of the appropriate allocation. 2.
