Explanation of Solution

There are certain characteristics of the living organisms, which cannot be performed by non living ones. These characters are listed below:

  • All organisms are made up of cells.
  • A living organism can respond to the external stimuli.
  • They grow and divide.
  • They have the ability to reproduce and produce progeny similar to them.
  • They perform locomotion and movement by themselves.
  • They are capable of performing all the metabolic processes necessary for their survival
  • They require nutrition to survive and obtain it from various sources.
Conclusion

To differentiate the living from the non living ones, the living organisms posses certain basic characteristics of the life, which include, reproduction, growth, response to stimuli, posses metabolic processes, and hereditary. The non living organism such as rock or tin cannot perform all of these functions.
