Concept explainers
To determine: The effect that hydrogen bonds might have on the likelihood that liquid water becomes vapor.
Introduction: In the simplest level of organization, the human body consists of various chemical structures. Different chemical structures play significant role for several reactions taking place inside a living cell. An atom is the smallest particle of an element. It is the smallest unit of matter, and matter is anything that has both mass and volume.
Explanation of Solution
A water molecule is shaped like a ‘V’ and consists of an oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. In water, the polar covalent bonds link the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in each molecule. The presence of hydrogen bond stabilizes water in form of liquid. Therefore, the presence of hydrogen bonds helps the water to evaporate less into the gaseous phase.
