Textbook Question
Chapter 2, Problem 11PIAT
How do organisms survive below freezing temperatures?
The winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectesamericanus) lives in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean and along the New England coast, where frigid water temperatures would normally turn the water inside the flounder's cells into ice. Does the flounder produce some type of antifreeze compound that prevents it from freezing solid?
The flounder is able to survive in very cold water, but only when water is in its liquid state. What property of water prevents the ocean from freezing solid when the temperature in the air is well below water's freezing point?

"Water molecules are small, but they are also polar. Recent evidence shows that they use special proteins called aquaporins, in a process of facilitated transport."

False
An H+ ion is smaller than an H2O molecule, and a glycerol molecule, a three-carbon alcohol, is much larger. Both readily dissolve in H2O. Why do aquaporins fail to transport H+ whereas some can transport glycerol?
Organisms that live in fresh water are almost always hypertonic to their environment .In what way is this a serious problem? How could some organisms cope with this problem ?

- Some people have proposed trying to artificially change the chemistry of seawater to make it more alkaline. What problem are they trying to address? Most organisms survive well in a highly alkaline environment, so changing the ocean's chemistry would increase our food supply. Coral reefs require an alkaline environment or they lose their zooxanthellae and become white. The ocean needs to be more alkaline so that the coral reefs can dissolve naturally to repeat the cycle of breakdown and renewal. The ocean has become increasingly acidified as it takes up CO2, harming living organisms such as coral reefs. There are too many fish in the ocean and making it more alkaline would make the numbers more manageable.arrow_forwardDDT is a persistent environmental pollutant once widely used as an insecticide. Using solubility principles, explain why shore birds that populate areas sprayed with DDT are found to have a high concentration of DDT in their tissues.arrow_forwardIn your travels around the Chesapeake Bay region, you have noticed that pink comb jellies (Beroe ovata) do not seem to be distributed evenly throughout the Bay. You suspect that this is because of environmental factors such as salinity, temperature, or the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water. You decide to pick one of these to test. Research question: Does salinity affect the distribution of pink comb jellies (Beroe ovata) in the Chesapeake Bay? After doing a little research in the literature, you discover that a common jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) prefers to live in higher salinity waters. (Comb jellies and jellyfish are not closely related, but since they are similar in structure, you hypothesize that they will react similarly to changes in salinity. a) Use this data, and sketch a graph by hand that would best fit the data. (think which type of graph would allow standard deviation to be included) b) Write an appropriate caption for your graph.arrow_forward
- Aside from hydration, pick two ways water's extraordinary properties affect living organisms. The cooling that occurs through evaporation of water helps to maintain an organism's body temperature. The only way that water affects living organisms is through hydration. The cooling that occurs through condensation of water helps to maintain an organism's body temperature. - i just answered a hw question that i was a little confused on. i answered it but am not fully sure if it's correct. so can you take a look at check if my answer is correct and if it's not, then a explaintion would be helpful. Would you expect water molecules to move faster when there is a HIGH concentration gradient or a LOW concentration gradient? Water molecules would move faster when there is a high concentration gradient because the pressure for the molecules in the high concentration to reach equilibrium increases since there are more molecules there than in the low concentration. So as the molecules move down the concentration gradient faster to equalize the concentration on both sides due to the increased pressure, the rate of diffusion increases.arrow_forwardThe process of “Freeze-Drying” Foods for long-term preservation of foods that can bestored at room temperature depends upon the ability of water molecules to: a. transiently ionize to H+ and –OH ions b. form an H+ gradient when the food being frozen by oxidative phosphorylization c. acquire enough energy to break hydrogen bonds so it can escape from its neighbors and evaporate, even when the water is frozen as ice d. hydrolyze ATP into ADP + Pi e. form hydrogen bonds with oilarrow_forwardOrganisms in terrestrial and aquatic habitats lose water through several mechanisms.
