Review the sectoral study of the Zambian effective tax burden in the link provided above. In particular focus on Analysis of the Effective Tax Burden in Zambia section E regarding a comparison with neighboring countries: South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Based on that section which country do you think has the best tax system out of the four and which one has the worst? State your reasons for each and provide support. Also, discuss if there are aspects about any of those countries' tax systems that you feel that Zambia should adopt.
5. (Maximum length one page.) You observe a society that has heterogeneous beliefs about the use of a
childhood vaccine to prevent a common and deadly infectious disease that spreads from person to
person. For decades the society has mandated that school children must be vaccinated against this
disease in order to attend school. However, they allow medical exemptions to this vaccine mandate.
During this time period the society has maintained a level of vaccine coverage above the level needed
for herd immunity and, as a result, infections of this disease have rarely occurred. A new
administration implements a new vaccine policy that removes the hard mandate by allowing for
personal belief exemptions to the vaccine requirement in addition to the already existing medical
exemptions. You observe that the rate of vaccine coverage drops only slightly, by one or two percent.
However, the population remains above the level of vaccine coverage needed for herd immunity.

- 3. (Maximum length one page.) In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, one in twelve individuals in elder care facilities within the United States died of COVID-19. Researchers discovered that the facilities that had the largest outbreaks of COVID-19 cases had larger shares of part time workers that worked at multiple (different) facilities. These multi-facility workers were small in number. Yet, as discussed in class, they had a large effect on the dynamics of the pandemic in elder care facilities. a) Using the concepts of social network analysis discussed in class, how would you explain this finding? b) How does the finding relate to economic circumstances of these part time workers? c) Provide two ideas related to economics and finance that could have alleviated this problem and also had an effect on inequality.arrow_forward4. (Maximum length one page.) Suppose that a new infectious disease begins spreading. Some people choose more or less exposure risk than others because of their level of risk aversion. Suppose that there are three groups of people in the population - one group has a high level of risk aversion, one group has a medium level, and one group has a low level (call this population with three groups, Population A). a) Discuss how a variety of levels of risk aversion affects the sorting of disease exposure. Give at least one example of this happening during the early years of Covid-19 that we discussed in class. b) Suppose that there is an alternative world composed of population B. In population B every individual has a level of risk aversion that matches the average risk aversion of population A. Should you be more worried about a large outbreak in population A or population B, why? c) Return to the world of population A. If you were to design a messaging campaign to warn people about this…arrow_forward2. (Maximum length one page.) Consider a strange infectious disease that infects cows and people. Cows live in a fenced pasture and spend their days wandering around aimlessly munching on grass; College students live like normal college students: some are more social than others, some study in isolation and others study in groups, etc.... Suppose that we examine the number of interactions of the cows and the students and find that the average number of interactions across which this infectious disease can spread is the same. a) Explain how epidemiologists use the concept of the reproduction number, R, and how R will differ across these two populations. In your response, be sure to state a definition for R; how Kucharski's DOTS framework can be used to understand R; and how it is used to understand infectious disease dynamics. b) How does the epidemiological concept of dispersion relate to R? How does it relate to superspreading and Pareto's "80-20 rule?" c) Based on the information…arrow_forward
