A 30-lb uniform cylinder can roll without sliding on a 15° incline. A belt is attached to the rim of the cylinder, and a spring holds the cylinder at rest in the position shown. If the center of the cylinder is moved 2 in. down the incline and released, determine (a) the period of vibration, (b) the maximum acceleration of the center of the cylinder.
A 1300-kg sports car has a center of gravity G located a distance h above a line connecting the front and rear axles. The car is suspended from cables that are attached to the front and rear axles as shown. Knowing that the periods of oscillation are 4.04 s when L = 4 m and 3.54 s when L = 3 m, determine h and the centroidal radius of gyration.
The length of a simple pendulum is 0.75 m and the mass of the particle (the "bob") at the end of the cable is 0.25 kg. The pendulum is pulled away from its equilibrium position by an angle of 8.10° and released from rest. Assume that friction can be neglected and that the resulting oscillatory motion is simple harmonic motion.
a. Using the position of the bob at its lowest point as the reference level, determine the total mechanical energy of the pendulum as it swings back and forth.
b. What is the bob's speed as it passes through the lowest point of the swing?

- Question 2 A reciprocating engine is installed on the fifth floor of a new building to provide ventilation services, which can be modelled as a rigid rectangular plate resting on four elastic columns. The total mass of the engine and floor is 1000 kg. At the rated speed of the engine, which is 750 rev/min, the engineers experienced large vibrations of the floor. It has been decided to reduce these vibrations by suspending a spring-mass system at the bottom surface of the floor as the absorber. (a) If the stiffness of the absorber is 980 kN/m, find the mass of the dynamic absorber to be attached to the floor. (b) Find the values of the absorber mass and absorber stiffness in order to have the natural frequencies of the combined system at least 25% away from the forcing frequency. Verify your answer with a calculation.arrow_forward1arrow_forwardTwo 40-g weights are attached at A and B to the rim of a 1.5-kg uniform disk of radius r = 100 mm. The differences are: (1) the stiffnesses of the members are k;= (E A/L);, where E is the modulus of elasticity, A represents the cross-sectional area and L is the length of the member; (2) there are two components of displacement at each joint. For the statically indeterminate truss shown the displacement formulation yields the symmetric equations Ku = p. where k;= (E A/L), where E is the modulus of elasticity, A represents the cross-sectional area and L is the length of the member; (2) there are two components of displacement at each joint. Due to aerodynamic effects and other losses, you observe that the amplitude of the vibration is halved after 5 complete cycles. If the initial mass was displaced 270 millimetres below the equilibrium position (i.e. negative initial displacement) and then released from rest, determine the position of the mass after 11 seconds. Give your answer in millimetres rounded to one decimal place.
