A capacitor has an initial charge of 10 µC. It is observed
that after discharging for 2ms through a resistor of 8.7 kn,
the charge of the capacitor is now only 8.1 μC.
What is the capacitance of the capacitor? Express your
answer in micro Farad, and keep three significant digits.
Answer:
The capacitors in Sample Problem No. 4 are connected in parallel instead of being in series. The
combination is connected to a 100 V line. Find the (a) total capacitance, (b) charge stored in each
capacitor, and (c) difference across each capacitor.
Sample No. 4:
4. Two capacitors with 2.0 F and 3.0 F capacitance, respectively, are
connected in series and subjected to a total potential difference of 100 V.
Find the (a) total capacitance, (b) charge stored in each capacitor, and
(c) potential difference across each capacitor.
Solution and Answer:
(a) -

Crotal
Crotal = 1.2 F
(b) 9totat = CrotaiVtotat = (1.2 F)(100 V) = 120 C
Since the capacitors are in series, qtotat = 120 C = q; = 92
(c) V across 2.0 F capacitor = 4 = 120 C
V across 3.0 F capacitor = =
= 60 V

You have a number of identical capacitors, each with a capacitance of 10 micro F and a working voltage of 20kV. How would you connect the capacitors such that the minimum number of capacitors is used that would be sufficient for a working voltage of 40 and an equivalent capacitance of 20 micro F?
