Summary Introduction

Introduction

In stage one of a demographic transition, both birth and death rates are high and population grows slowly or not at all. Stage two features falling death rates while birth rates remain high, so population grows quickly. In stage three, birth rates drop and population stabilizes. Birth rates continue to decline in stage four, while death rates stay the same, so population slowly declines. Some demographers feel we have entered the fourth stage because the birth rate in many developed nations has fallen below replacement level (meaning that a married couple would have at least two children to replace them), while the death rate remains steady.
