Chapter 18.3, Problem 7AYP
Summary Introduction
To summarize:
The methods used to differentiate infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Also, discuss the spectrum of skin and tissue diseases caused by each.
Concept introduction:
The most prevalent cause of bacterial infection in a healthy person is Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. These bacteria enter the skin of a healthy individual through a small cut or break and cause blisters and swollen lesions accompanied by several other symptoms. Cellulitis and impetigo are mainly caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. All the infections related to hair follicle are mainly caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

Explain strategies used to prevent and treat staphylococcalinfections, and how infection with drug-resistant strains ofStaphylococcus affects these strategies.
Please refer to the given scenario below. What is the most appropriate sample to
be collected to isolate the causative agent of the infection? *
A 46-year-old male encountered a motor-vehicular accident (MVA) resulting in
multiple injuries on his anterior chest and left lower extremities. Aside from the injury, his
medical history was unremarkable. The patient was admitted for nine days and underwent
debridement and was discharged with an external fixator. However, during his admission, on
his 7m post-operative day, the wound was noted to have persistent purulent, bloody
discharge from drain site, which is highly suggestive of surgical site infection (SSI).
