Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: In glycoside formation, the reagent required for the conversion of the hemiacetal functional group of a cyclic monosaccharide to an acetal group has to be predicted.

Concept introduction: If an $-\text{OH}$ group and an $-\text{OR}$ group are attached to the same carbon atom, then the compound is known as a hemiacetal.  If two $-\text{OR}$ groups are attached to the same carbon atom, then the compound is known as an acetal.
