Chapter 18, Problem 3Q
Summary Introduction
To explain: The reason that cells have evolved a special G0 phase to exit from cell cycle rather than just stopping in G1 and not moving on to the S phase.
Introduction: All living organisms depend on a crucial mechanism called cell cycle to reproduce. The cell cycle involves the following phases: G0 phase, G1 phase, S phase, G2 phase, and M phase (G-Gap, S-Synthesis, and M-Mitotic). Here, G0 is the resting phase that is permanent in the case of neurons of the brain, whereas in normal cells, it is the intermediate phase during which the cell delays itself for the next round of cell division in the case of unfavorable conditions.
