Interpretation:
Researchers at the Centre for complementary medicine in Munich, Germany, reviewed 29 studies of patients with depression that are compared treatment with St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) with treatment with a placebo or with standard antidepressant medications. They concluded, “overall… the St. Wort extracts…were superior to placebos and as effective as standard antidepressants, with fewer side effects.” They also noted that studies in German-speaking countries, where the herbal remedy has long been used, were more favorable to St. john’s wort than were studies from other countries and that products on the market vary in composition and can sometimes compromise the effects of other medications.
