Concept explainers
To describe: The structure of a flagellum.
Introduction: Bacteria are the microscopic, single-celled organism that thrives in diverse environments. Flagella are the major organelles for the motility of bacteria, the motility occurs in spirochetes and rod-shaped bacteria.
Explanation of Solution
Structure of the flagellum:
Flagella of bacteria are helical shaped, fibrous appendages composed of protein subunits. The base of the flagella near the cell surface is attached to the basal body in the cell envelope. The wider region that presents at the base of the flagella is known as the hook. It connects the filaments to the motor portion of the flagella known as the basal body.
To define: The way by which flagella generate cell motility.
Explanation of Solution
The filamentous protein structure attached to the surface of the cell is called flagella. They are responsible for the swimming movement. The flagellum rotates clockwise to change and tumble the direction; and it rotates counter clockwise direction to propel the cell forward.
