Concept introduction: Several processes in digestive system are controlled by the peripheral nervous system. These processes include saliva secretion from salivary glands, food movement (peristalsis) along the digestive system, opening and closing of esophageal sphincter muscles, gastric secretion, and hormonal release to facilitate the digestion.
