Chapter 16, Problem 83PP
Fiberglass is a popular, economical, and fairly effective building insulation. It consists of fine glass fibers—often including recycled glass—formed loosely into rectangular slabs or rolled into blankets (Fig. 16.18). One side is often faced with heavy paper or aluminum foil. Fiberglass insulation comes in thicknesses compatible with common building materials—for example, 3.5 inch and 6 inch for wood-framed walls. Standard 6-inch fiberglass has an R-factor of 19.

One easy way to reduce heating (and cooling) costs is to add extra insulation in the attic of a house. Suppose a single-story cubical house already had 15 cm of fiberglass insulation in the attic and in all the exterior surfaces. If you added an extra 8.0 cm of fiberglass to the attic, by what percentage would the heating cost of the house drop? Take the house to have dimensions 10 m by 15 m by 3.0m. Ignore air infiltration and heat loss through windowsand doors, and assume that the interior is uniformly at one temperature and the exterior is uniformly at another.
One easy way to reduce heating (and cooling) costs is to add extra insulation in the attic of a house. Suppose the house
already had 15.0 cm of fiberglass (glass wool) insulation in the attic and in all the exterior surfaces (including the floor of the
attic room). If you added an extra 7.8100000000000005 cm of fiberglass to the attic ceiling, then by what percentage would
the heating cost of the house drop? Take the room to be of dimensions 10 m by 15 m by 3.0 m. Ignore air infiltration and heat
loss through windows and doors, and give your answer to one decimal place. Assume the same temperature difference
between inside and outside the attic room, and that heat is lost through all six sides of the room.
Hint: The cost of heating will be related to the amount of heat that is transferred through the walls, the floor and the ceiling of
the attic. If let's say the heat loss is 1000 W in total (walls+floor+ceiling) without insulation, and then 800W in total with
insulation, we are…

- During a plant visit, it was noticed that a 12-m-long section of a 10-cm-diameter steam pipe is completely exposed to the ambient air. The temperature measurements indicate that the average temperature of the outer surface of the steam pipe is 75°C when the ambient temperature is 5°C. There are also light winds in the area at 10 km/h. The emissivity of the outer surface of the pipe is 0.8, and the average temperature of the surfaces surrounding the pipe, including the sky, is estimated to be 0°C. Determine the amount of heat lost from the steam during a 10-h-long work day. Steam is supplied by a gas-fired steam generator that has an efficiency of 80 percent, and the plant pays $1.05/therm of natural gas.
