Introduction:

The elements in the periodic table are arranged as per their atomic number and their electronic configuration. Total 118 element are arranged in the periodic table as various rows and columns. 

The elements in the periodic table are seven rows and called as periods which are arranged as metals on the left side and nonmetals on the right side that contains similar chemical behavior.

The elements arranged in vertical columns are called groups or families.These groups are based on their chemical behavior (similar chemical behavior). And all the families/groups have the same number of valence electrons.

 Conclusion: 

The elements in the table are arranged in a vertical column are called families or groups. They contain the same number of valence electrons and chemical behavior.
