Chapter 16, Problem 4RC
Summary Introduction

To review:

The nuclei through which nerve impulses pass to reach their destination in the brain. Also, give the name of destination of impulses in the brain, which arises from the proprioceptors.

Introduction:

The central nervous system (CNS) contains a cluster of neurons that are present deep in the cerebral hemisphere and the brainstem. These clusters of neurons are called nuclei. The cells of these nuclei are associated with each other by the bundles of axon extension. Proprioceptor is a sensory receptor present that provides information about position and movement.

Which of the following statements about the basal nuclei are correct? (SELECT ALL THAT APPLY) a.) The basal nuclei get information from only parts of the cerebral cortex that are involved in movement planning   b.) Parkinson's disease is a condition that affects the normal functioning of the basal nuclei   c.) The basal nuclei have an indirect pathway that tends to excite and thus increase the activity of the output nuclei (The Globus pallidus internal segment and substantia nigra pars reticulata) of the basal nuclei.   d.) The basal nuclei have a direct pathway that tends to inhibit and thus reduce the activity of the output nuclei (The Globus pallidus internal segment and substantia nigra pars reticulata) of the basal nuclei.
Imagine you are walking and encounter an unexpected change in ground elevation and you begin to stumble. In order to recover your balance, what components of the nervous systems would be most significantly involved? a.) Cerebrum and corticospinal tracts b.) Primary motor cortex and corticospinal tracts c.) Cerebellum and vestibulospinal tracts d.) Sensory cortex and somatosensory tracts
Which nervous system component belongs to its corressponding motor pathway? Nervous System Compnent Motor Pathway Cerebellum A) plan and initiate voluntary movements Spinal Cord B) refine and adjust movements Brainstem C) relay commands to most muscles below the neck Frontal Lobe D) relay commands to muscles of facial expression, eye movement, chewing, and swallowing
