Concept Introduction:

A redox reaction is a type of reaction in which oxidation state of all of the species changes. This type of reaction is actually characterized by the transfer of electron from one species to another. The chemical species that loses electrons is said to be oxidized and the species that gains electrons is said to be reduced.

If in a redox reaction, an element in a compound at a fixed oxidation state is oxidized and reduced simultaneously, then the redox reaction is called disproportionation reaction.
