Concept explainers
To explain: Whether Pangea or Gondwana form first.
Concept Introduction: Plate tectonics is the theory that explains about the movement and features of the earth’s surface plate. The supercontinents Gondwana and Pangea are formed due to the breakage when all the populations are combined together or divide up during solidification of the earth’s outer rock layer that had taken place 455 billion years ago. Gondwana was the primeval supercontinent that was present around 540 million years ago. It had started break up around 180 million years ago. The supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras was Pangea that was present around 335 million years ago. It had started to break up around 175 million years ago.

- There was a large proliferation of fossils showing increase in diversity of life. What period is this?arrow_forwardWe live in the Cenozoic era, and scientists know more about this era and the epochs it’s divided into than any other time period. Why is this? A. We know more about the Cenozoic era because this is the only era that has had a wide diversity of species living on Earth. B. We know more about the Cenozoic era because this is the most recent time period in the history of the Earth, and we have more information available to study. C. We know more about the Cenozoic era because the planet’s poles reversed magnetic fields at the beginning of this era. D. We know more about the Cenozoic era because fossils don’t exist to document previous eras.arrow_forwardWhat is the role of mass extinctions to evolution?arrow_forward
