Chapter 15, Problem 1PIT
Summary Introduction

To add:

Life’s history, DNA evidence, Fossil evidence to Pull It Together concept map.

Concept introduction:

Scientists study the history of life in the context of the geologic timescale that divides time into various eons, eras, period and epoch. The Earth formed around 4.6 billion years ago and was very hot at that time. It slowly cooled down to form Earth crust around 4.1 billion years ago. The origin of life became possible only after that. The various events that occurred after the origin of life can be studied through fossil records and molecular data.

1. Understanding geologic time is significant because it helps us  a. Understand humans’ impact on our environment b. Understand the process of evolution c. Understand the possibility for life on other planets d. Understand the evolution of organisms over time
Explain The Core Theme: Evolution accountsfor the unity and diversity of life
9. Which statement best describes the relationship between the theory of evolution and the origin of life? O The theory cannot explain the origin of life. O The theory does not try to explain the origin of life. O The theory does not contribute understanding to pre-life processes. O The theory includes an explanation of life's origins. O 0.63 and 0.37 O 0.37 and 0.63 10. Which of the following would best determine whether two plant species share a recent common ancestor? O DNA sequences O Stem lengths O Flowering times O Habitat distribution 11. What is genetic variance? O The magnification of genetic drift as a result of natural events or catastrophes O The diversity of alleles and genotypes within a population O The change in a population's genetic structure O The effect of chance on a population's gene pool 12. How does an adaptation, such as better running speed, relate to natural selection? O Natural selection randomly mutates individuals' genetic code until it produces beneficial…
