A crow flies from the corner of 1st Ave and 1st Street to the corner of m th Ave and n th Street, “as the crow flies.” Assume that m and n are positive integers greater than 1 and the streets and avenues are simply lines on a map. If the crow flies over an intersection, then he flies over only two of the blocks that meet at the intersection.
a. If m – 1 and n – 1 are relatively prime (no common factors), then how many city blocks does the crow fly over?
b. If d is the greatest common factor for m and n, then how many city blocks does the crow fly over?
