Chapter 14, Problem 33E
Speed of light In 1882, Michelson measured the speed of light (usually denoted c as in Einstein’s famous equation E = mc2). His values are in km/sec and have 299,000 subtracted from them. He reported the results of 23 trials with a mean of 756.22 and a standard deviation of 107.12.
- a) Find a 95% confidence interval for the true speed of light from these statistics.
- b) State in words what this interval means. Keep in mind that the speed of light is a physical constant that, as far as we know, has a value that is true throughout the universe.
- c) What assumptions must you make in order to use your method?

Approximate the population mean and standard deviation of age for females. By the way, we find the midpoints by adding the first numbers before the hyphens in the age column and then dividing by 2 (ex: 0+10/2=5, 10+20/2=15, 20+30/2=25).
Write down the formulas for the standard deviation of x.

Answer EB Tables Keyboard S False; a standard deviation can only assume a value between zero and one. True; by definition, the only value the standard deviation cannot be is zero. False; standard deviations can never be whole numbers since they are computed from a square root. True; the standard deviation can be any value greater than or equal to zero.
