Chapter 14, Problem 10E

Explain why an ABAB reversal design is inappropriate for a treatment that has a permanent or long-lasting effect.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The reason behind the inappropriateness of ABAB design for a treatment that has permanent or long-lasting effects.

Explanation of Solution

If the treatment has long-lasting effects on a dependent variable then it is not possible that a difference can be viewed after removal of treatment or in other words, the system will not be affected by the treatment, once the treatment is introduced. So, the removal or to introduce the treatment to a system is meaningless in terms of time and resources as it is totally wasted according to ABAB design. In that case, it is not suitable design because of waste of time and resources as the effect of treatment cannot be visualized after removal of treatment.

Arthritis is a very commonly occurring affliction. It is a major cause of lost work time and often results in serious disability.  Of the many types of arthritis, the most common type is osteoarthritis.  This condition is frequently due to wear and tear in the joints and is more likely to be found in people over 50.  It is very painful in the weight-bearing joints, such as the knees and hips.  Cartilage wears away on the bone ends, causing pain and swelling.  Osteoarthritis may develop after an injury such as a bone fracture or a joint dislocation.  To reduce the amount of time osteoarthritis patients are absent from work, it is important for them to have effective pain relief.  An experiment was conducted to compare the effectiveness of three new analgesics: A1, A2, and A3.  A clinic evaluated a large group of patients and identified 45 patients with a moderate level of pain.  Fifteen of the 45 persons were then randomly assigned to one of the three analgesics.  The patients were then…
As humans we consume food. The body extracts good things such as proteins and vitamins and throws away waste. A typical waste product is uric acid. High levels of uric acid can be an indication of conditions such as gout, kidney disease, and cancer. For females a high level of uric acid is 6 mg/dL or more and for males a high level of uric acid is 7 mg/dL or more. Suppose, over a period of months, an adult male was given 9 blood tests for uric acid. The results of each blood test are shown below. results 10.24 10.1 11.19 11.1 9.34 9.58 9.63 10.59 9.58 The distribution of uric acid in healthy adult males is normally distributed with known population standard deviation, σ=1.15σ=1.15 mg/dl.Find a 95% confidence interval for the population mean of uric acid in this adult male's blood. Assume the sample of blood tests were given in a way that's equivalent to a simple random sample. (Round your answers to two decimal places.) margin of error ?  mg/dLlower limit?    mg/dLupper limit?…
