Question: Nancy K. was ice skating and had a really bad fall. She landed awkwardly on her back and an X-ray shows she shattered a vertebra near the bottom of the thoracic region (the T-11 vertebra; mid-lower back). Unfortunately, the break crushed her spinal cord in the region, and now her brain is no longer able to send or receive signals through spinal nerves below the fracture.
Which body parts are LEAST likely to be paralyzed by this horrific accident?
Select the best answer or answers from the choices given: A patient has suffered a cerebral hemorrhage that has caused dysfunction of the precentral gyrus of his right cerebral cortex. As a result, (a) he cannot voluntarily move his left arm or leg, (b) he feels no sensation on the left side of his body, (c) he feels no sensation on his right side.
When a patient flexes their neck, the head tips to the right side. Also, their tongue sticks out slightly to the left when they try to stick it straight out. Where is the damage to the brain stem most likely located?

Notice that there are visible folds (“bumps and grooves”) on this structure. Each elevated bump is called a __2_ while each shallow groove is called a __3_. Located at the “back of the brain” is the __4_____. In the longitudinal cut you are looking at, you’ll notice that it has an internal, tree-like pattern called arbor vitae. This part of the brain coordinates equilibrium and motor activity to produce smooth, controlled movements. The brain stem connects the brain to the spinal cord. It kind of looks like a tail coming out the back. It includes three parts including the posterior-most _5__, the bulb-like _6__ and anterior-most _7__. This region of the brain contains centers for breathing and heart rate. It also serves as a relay station for nerve impulses traveling between the brain and the spinal cord. She had taken three exams, and as if that wasn't stressful enough, her sister was ill and Amanda had to spend much of her time helping out at home. By the end of the week, Amanda decided to go to the beach for a walk and some genuine relaxation. The day was warm and Amanda took off her shoes so she could walk barefoot and feel the sand between her toes. Halfway down the beach, she stepped on something extremely sharp and withdrew her foot in pain. As Amanda hopped around the sand on one foot, rubbing the other to ease the pain, she decided to put her shoes back on. As Amanda stepped on something sharp, she withdrew her foot due to reflexes. Any pain experienced would have been just AFTER she moved her foot off of the sharp object. Why is there a delay in perceiving the pain sensation?arrow_forward
