Introduction

When the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed segregated schools in the mid-1950s, social psychologists were thrilled and optimistic, since they believed that desegregation would increase minority children’s self-esteem and decrease the rate of prejudice in schools. The position that social interactions between different groups would decrease prejudice came to be known as the contact hypothesis.
