To explain: The reason for which pulmonary edema causes severe hypoxia.
Concept introduction: The accumulation of fluid in the tissue and air spaces of the lungs is known as pulmonary edema. The fluid is accumulated in the alveoli and interstitial area. It leads to gas exchange impairment and respiratory failure.

To describe: The path of pulmonary embolus resulting from thrombophlebitis.
Concept introduction: Pulmonary emboli are the blood clots or the mass of other materials that block the pulmonary artery or the branches of pulmonary arteries. Due this blockage, the flow of the blood through the lung tissue is also blocked. The manifestations of pulmonary emboli are chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, low blood oxygen levels, coughing up blood, and mild fever.

To compare: The effects on respiration of very small embolus and a very large one.
