Dunstreet's Department Store would like to develop an inventory ordering policy of a 90 percent probability of not stocking out. To illustrate your recommended procedure, use as an example the ordering policy for white percale sheets.Demand for white percale sheets is 3,400 per year. The store is open 365 days per year. Every two weeks (14 days) inventory is counted and a new order is placed. It takes 12 days for the sheets to be delivered. Standard deviation of demand for the sheets is five per day. There are currently 170 sheets on hand. How many sheets should you order?
Gentle Ben's Bar and Restaurant uses 7,200 quart bottles of an imported wine each year. The effervescent wine costs $9 per bottle and is served only in whole bottles because it loses its bubbles quickly. Ben figures that it costs $25 each time an order is placed, and holding costs are 40 percent of the purchase price. It takes six weeks for an order to arrive. Weekly demand is 144 bottles (closed two weeks per year) with a standard deviation of 40 bottles.
Ben would like to use an inventory system that minimizes inventory cost and will provide a 99 percent service probability.
a. What is the economic quantity for Ben to order?
b. At what inventory level should he place an order?
(i) Electronics Ltd manufactures air conditioners. It purchases 200,000 units of a particular type of compressor part, CU30, each year at a cost of $64 per unit. Annual carrying cost (for insurance, material handling, breakage etc) per unit is 5% of the unit purchase price. Currently Electronics Ltd places 50 orders for 4,000 units each year and ordering costs per purchase order are $18.
ii) Maximum usage for Electronics Ltd. for any one week is 1,000 units and the minimum usage 400 units. Suppliers take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to deliver supplies after the order is placed. Using the EOQ policy, determine the re-order level, minimum level & maximum level of inventory.
