You are an accounting student at Berkeley College and will not graduate for another year. But because of your excellent grades so far, you have been able to land a job in the purchasing department of a retailer. One of the purchasing agents in your company is negotiating for the receipt of a very large order of uninsured goods from a supplier. The purchasing agent is able to get a better deal on the goods if they are shipped FOB shipping point rather than FOB destination. The agent doesn’t know the difference between these two concepts. He also doesn’t understand why choosing one over the other should make any difference to the company. As a student of accounting at Berkeley College, you know well the difference between these 2 concepts and you know why one would be a better choice over the other in the case of uninsured goods. Please explain these two concepts in this discussion and tell the purchasing agent which shipping method is preferable and why.
You are a recent Berkeley College graduate and you are working in the accounting department of Macy’s. Next week, you are required to attend an inventory meeting for the store located in the Paramus Park mall. You know this store well because you shop there frequently. One of the managers of the store feels that the men’s shoe department is unprofitable because the selection is poor, there are few sizes available, and there just aren’t enough shoes. The manager is pushing for a very large shoe inventory to make the department more desirable to shoppers and therefore more profitable. Explain in this discussion why it is good or bad to have a large inventory of shoes.

Every sale must bear its share of the full costs of running the business. If we sell below our full cost, we'll be out of business in no time.” What do you think of this remark?arrow_forward
- You are the bookkeeper at a small merchandising firm. You are comparing the income statements from the last three years. You notice that the Purchases Returns and Allowances account (as a percentage of net sales) has been increasing at an alarming rate. What types of questions would you ask?arrow_forwardYou are a newly hired accountant for Sushi Beeber, Inc., a retail company specializing in apparel for small pets. The company would like to expand its apparel line to include sweaters for cats. Sushi Beeber has found several manufacturers that offer competitive prices to ensure cost of goods sold is low. Because the company receives merchandise from different manufacturers and the cat sweaters will be commoditized, the company needs to develop an internal accounting system to keep track of inventory cost. You think that the weighted average cost method may help the company stay up-to-date with the inventory cost as purchase cost changes over time. Your task is to create a spreadsheet that can calculate the inventory cost based on purchases and sales for the month. See attached spreadsheet.-this has the information you need! The intern noticed that the client used the FIFO method of determining ending inventory and cost of goods sold. When she asked a colleague why the firm used FIFO instead of LIFO, she was told that the client used FIFO to minimize its income tax liability. This response puzzled the intern because she thought that LIFO would minimize income tax liability. The two of you are waiting for an elevator one morning. What are the major features of each system? Explain why a physical inventory is necessary under both systems.arrow_forward
- In "Retail: Discounters Get Their Day”, Business Week, January 14, 2002, the authors suggest that consumers will try to stretch their dollars. So discounters and value-oriented retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Stores will continue to take market share away from mall-based department stores and specialty stores. The authors also suggest retailers will have “to keep an eye on inventory and other expenses." How could an excessive build-up of inventory hurt a retailer’s bottom line?arrow_forwardThe chief executive officer (CEO) of Ozark Industries has just returned from a management seminar describing the benefits of the just-in-time philosophy. The CEO issued the following statement after returning from the conference: This company will become a just-in-time manufacturing company. Presently, we have too much inventory. To become just-in-time, we need to eliminate the excess inventory. Therefore, I want all employees to begin reducing inventories until we are just-in-time. Thank you for your cooperation. All of the following are accurate responses to counter the CEO's misunderstandings about the benefits of the just-in-time philosophy except for: To achieve just-in-time, the company must remove the reasons for excess inventory rather than just reduce the inventory. OIf the employees follow the CEO's orders without making the process improvements, the plant will likely suffer reduced productivity. O The CEO has not provided the training or action plan for moving to…arrow_forwardKaren's retail store sells apparel. The store is in the third year of operations and is struggling financially. Part of the problem is that the cost of inventory has increased. The store assigns inventory costs using LIFO. A loan agreement with the bank requires the store to maintain a certain profit margin. Karen is reviewing the current year financial statements and sees that results are not favorable. The only way that the store can meet the required profit margin is to change inventory costing from LIFO to FIFO. Karen redoes the financial statements using FIFO and submits them to the bank without disclosing the change. How is it that FIFO improves the profit of the store? Did Karen make a good ethical choice by changing to FIFO? Why or why not? What alternatives did Karen have in this situation?arrow_forward
