Summary Introduction

To describe: The binomial nomenclature.

Introduction: There are about 10 million eukaryotic species and several unknown number of prokaryotes. The scientific study about the biological diversity and their evolutionary history is known as systematics. Systematics helps to discover all the branches of a phylogenetic tree of life and thus helps to determine the genetic relationship between related organisms.

Explanation of Solution

Binomial nomenclature was introduced by Carl Linnaeus who attempted to name and describes all known species of plants and animals. He describes each species using 12 words, which s known as polynomials. In order to simplify it, Linnaeus made a permanent “two-term’ system of naming known as “binomial system of nomenclature”. According to binomial nomenclature, every species is described by two words in Latin. The first word is called the “genus name” and the second name is called the “species name”. The binomial name is always written in italics and the first letter of the genus name is written in capital letter.
