Concept explainers
The process of pair production and basic transformation taking place in these production reactions.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Pair production is a process of creation of a subatomic particle and its antiparticle during interaction. In pair production, radiant energy is directly converted into matter and high-energy gamma rays are absorbed.
Pair production is a process of formation of a subatomic particle and its antiparticle from boson. For examples: pair of an electron and a positron, a muon and an anti-muon participate in pair production. A photon creates an electron-positron pair close to a nucleus. For pair production to occur, a photon should have energy at least equivalent to the mass of the two electrons.
Energy and momentum are conserved during pair production. Any two of: charge, lepton number, strangeness or baryon number are also conserved.
Conclusion:
Thus, pair production is the process of creation of a subatomic particle and its antiparticle during interaction. Energy and momentum are conserved during pair production and other two characteristics of elementary particle is also conserved.
