Summary Introduction

To determine:

The evidences that supports the endosymbiotic theory.

Introduction:

The mitochondria are the cellular organelles that provide the “cellular energy”. The chloroplasts are the cellular organelles present in the plant and algal cells that help in the photosynthesis of the food.

 </SUMMARY-INTRODUCTION>

The parasitic mitochondria and chloroplast are aerobic that has DNA, but they cannot act independently and they depend upon the anaerobic cells. The mitochondria are called as power house of the cell and give energy to the animal cell and the chloroplast help in photosynthesis incase of plants. The host cell depends upon the parasitic mitochondria and chloroplast for the production of ATP and photosynthesis. This theory is known as endosymbiotic theory and it is proposed by Lynn Margulis in 1938. This theory is disowned since it did not explain about the two membranes present in the nuclear envelope.

Similarities between the prokaryote, mitochondria and chloroplast:

  • Both the bacteria and organelles (mitochondria and chloroplast) have their own cell membranes.
  • Both the bacteria and organelles (mitochondria and chloroplast) have small circular DNA.
  • Both the mitochondria and bacteria reproduce through binary fission.

The evidence to support endosymbiotic theory and features that does not support the theory is discussed.
