Exercises 49-54 deal with sickle cell anemia, an inherited disease in which red blood cells become distorted and deprived of oxygen. Approximately 1 in every 500 African-American infants is born with the disease; only I in 160,000 white infants has the disease. A person with two sickle cell genes will have the disease, but a person with only one sickle cell gene will have a mild, nonfatal anemia called sickle cell trait. (Approximately 8%-10% of the African-American population has this trait.)

If we use s to represent a sickle cell gene and S a healthy gene, the above table shows the four possibilities for the children of two Ss parents. Each parent has only one sickle cell gene, so each has the relatively mild sickle cell trait. Find the probability that these parents give birth to a child who

- Suppose a birth defect has a recessive form of inheritance. In a study population, the recessive gene (a) initially has aprevalence of 25%. A subject has the birth defect if bothmaternal and paternal genes are of type a. A further study finds that after 10 generations (≈200 years)a lot of inbreeding has taken place in the population. Twosubpopulations (populations A and B), consisting of 30%and 70% of the general population, respectively, haveformed. Within population A, prevalence of the recessivegene is 40%, whereas in population B it is 10%. Suppose that a baby is born with a birth defect, but the baby’s ancestry is unknown. What is the posteriorprobability that the baby will have both parents from population A, both parents from population B, or mixed ancestry, respectively? (Hint: Use Bayes’ rule.)arrow_forwardBiologists wish to mate pairs of fruit flies having genetic makeup RrCc, indicating that each has one dominant gene (R) and one recessive gene (r) for eye color, along with one dominant (C) and one recessive (c) gene for wing type. Each offspring will receive one gene for each of the two traits from each parent, so the biologists predict that the following phenotypes should occur in a ratio of 9:3:3:1. Phenotype Frequency Red eyes and Red eyes and straight wings curly wings 99 42 White eyes and straight wings 49 White eyes and curly wings 10 Use a chi-square goodness-of-fit test to compute a test statistic and P-value. At the a = 0.05 significance level, what can be concluded about the proposed genetic model? Because the P-value of 0.1029 > 0.05, we cannot reject the null hypothesis. We do not have convincing evidence that the distribution of eye color and wing shape is different from what the biologists predict. Because the P-value of 0.5177 > 0.05, we cannot reject the null…arrow_forwardAccording to CDC estimates, more than 2.8 million people in the United States are sickened each year with antibiotic‑resistant infections, with at least 35,000 dying as a result. Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease‑causing microbes become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy. Because this resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next generations of microbes, it is a very serious public health problem. Of the infections considered most serious by the CDC, gonorrhea has an estimated 1.14 million new cases occurring annually, and approximately 50% of those cases are resistant to any antibiotic. Assume a health clinic in California sees 11 patients with gonorrhea in a given week. Information obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, at www.cdc.gov. Therefore, when someone needs a transfusion in an emergency and their blood type cannot be determined, they are given type O negative blood. For this reason, donors with this blood type are crucial to blood banks. Unfortunately, this blood type is fairly rare; according to the Red Cross, only 7% of U.S. residents have type O negative blood. Assume that a blood bank has recruited 19 donors. - Dogwood trees - Researchers studying dogwood trees found that 89% of the dogwood trees of a standard strain die within three years of planting in a particular industrial area. Martin, a researcher at a nearby university, is currently studying a new strain of dogwood tree, believed to be resistant to air pollution. In an initial phase of the study, Martin found that 50 seedlings of the new strain were planted in the area and 42 (84%) of them died in three years. 1. Martin wants to know it the new strain of dogwood tree is more resistant to air pollution than the standard strain.
