Question
Chapter 11, Problem 7TYK
Summary Introduction
Concept introduction: The ‘loss of function’ or ‘gain of function’ mutations in genes that normally regulate cell cycle result in abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells. Thus, the accumulation of these mutations leads to cancer. On the basis of the regulation, the genes are categorized as proto-oncogenes, genome maintenance genes, and tumor-suppressor genes. Proto-oncogenes are responsible for survival and cell division. Tumor-suppressor genes inhibit survival and cell division. Genome maintenance genes are involved in DNA repair and preventing DNA damage.
