One of the important features of biological membranes is membrane fluidity. The proper functioning of various membrane proteins depends upon the lateral rapid movement of the lipid molecules, hence its importance. During lipid imbalance or membrane synthesis, the lipid molecules are transferredfrom one side of a lipid bilayer to the other;this process is called facilitated diffusion as it requires mediator proteins that utilize ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
