Introduction

Genocide is the systematic effort to murder all people in a group. Ethnic cleansing is creating homogenous areas by expelling or killing people in other groups. Segregation is keeping different ethnic groups physically apart from others. While they refer to very different processes, there is a strong connection between the three of them. Ethnic cleansing and genocide often begin with segregation, creating an “us versus them” mentality in a population.
