Concept explainers
Choose the best answer to each of the following. Explain your reasoning.
What do we mean by the halo of galaxy? (a) It is the central region that is crowded with stars. (b) It is a large, roughly spherical region surrounding the disk. (c) It is the pancake-shaped region in which spiral arms are found.
To Choose:
The correct option.
Answer to Problem 1QQ
The option (b) is the correct answer.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Galaxies can be classified on the basis of shapes and into three main categories: Spiral, Elliptical and Irregular. Spiral galaxies have three main parts: bulge, halo and disk. Bulge is present in center. It contains old stars mostly. The disk contains young stars and forms the arms of the galaxy.
Halo is a loose structure that surrounds the bulge and some parts of disk. The old star clusters or the globular clusters lie in the halo part of the spiral galaxy. It is not the dominant region which is crowded with starsand is called the galactic central region. It is also not like a pancake region. Hence, both options a and c are not right.
Conclusion:
Therefore,a halo of the galaxy is a large, roughly spherical region surrounding the disk.
